Re: "Diesel" power
Sounds like there's no takers for your problem so here goes with some thoughts from a steam locomotive man. Fools rush in and all that! I did research this some time ago. First port of call was the "Handbook for diesel locomotive enginemen" or something like that, that was issued to BR drivers. Basi...

Re: Super Claud, looking for the right number.
Holgar, No.62613 was the last Claud to be withdrawn during September 1960. I have seen something on the internet recently about the attempt to preserve it but I can't remember where. I presume you would want it in GER livery since I believe you are painting it blue. you would have to trace its numbe...

Re: Workbench: BR 21 ton hopper
Thanks Keith, much appreciated. I made no particular effort on the paint and it looks better in the photo than close up. Industrial I would call it. I can't say I've ever had problems with varnish on transfers, and I've done a few over the years, but there's always a first time. I see you are gettin...

Re: Workbench: BR 21 ton hopper
The forum has gone very quiet lately. I guess everyone is beavering away in the workshop and hasn't got time to write posts. My Hopper is done as far as I can get now, just waiting for transfers from Dave to finish it.

Re: Lamps?
Holger, The tail lamp could be anywhere. Most passenger trains had the lamp brackets at about half height, one either side of the corridor connection. Goods brakes more often than not had the bracket towards the top of the veranda on the centre line, sometimes one each side but near the middle. This...

Re: Lamps?
Holger, One lamp only of this type on any train. There were exceptions but not circumstances that you would be likely to encounter. Goods brakes also ran with side lamps. These had white lenses facing forward and red to the rear but the codes for their use was complicated. The lamp you show on the c...

Re: Lamps?
Holger,
You have a standard BR tail lamp, used on both passenger and freight trains like this one. It has a red lens.
Sorry the photos are sideways - I couldn't get them to load vertical

Re: Workbench: BR 21 ton hopper
I thought I'd show the progress on my 21T hopper. I'm close to the end now, all the bits are made - just waiting for Dave to send the buffer stocks. I'm busy with the door gear and have completed a trial erection to see if everything fits and all the clearances are adequate. I now need to drill the ...

Re: Workbench: BR 21 ton hopper
Richard, I like the video - just like the real thing! Memories of standing at Harton Staithes. Here's a shot of Bill's wagon at the main line rally with Dave's in the far background Bills 21Tonner Aug 11.JPG And here's one of my wagon in the workshop, wheeled with temporary springs. 21T Hopper 07-09...

Re: Workbench: BR 21 ton hopper
Richard, You are not alone by any means. My 21T hopper will be completed soon. It is behind yours at the moment, but the intention is to make a push to have it complete by the end of October so as I can get back to loco building. There was another one running and almost complete at the main line ral...

Re: Workbench: BR 21 ton hopper
Richard, Good to see another hopper moving on. Here's the one I'm putting together from a Dave Noble kit:- 21T Hopper Frame.JPG Should have read this thread again before riveting on the axleguards, I'll have a couple to take out now. In hind sight I would fix the axleguards before assembling the fra...

Re: track bed
Interesting this thread should revive after five years. If you go back to my post on the subject (30th March 2006) you will see my view. I have been involved in the construction of a GL railway at Newcastle in some very wet ground conditions and there was no problem with frost this winter gone. The ...

If we look at what we state we do from the Home page of this website it is possible to check that we are achieving the organization's objectives: "The GL5 Association has an increasing and very active membership, who have a focused objective in terms of prototypical railway operation in ground level...

Re: RIVET GUNS
Daniel, Why do you need a rivet gun? We usually use a ball peen hammer and various "rivet sets" or "snaps" when we rivet on our models. "Rivet gun" is associated with pop rivets which you won't be using. If you are thinking of riveting the frames and horns you will be using soft iron or steel rivets...

Richard, Thanks for showing us your, or should I say Doug's jig for joggling. I suppose the plate should be as thick as the joggle offset and the slot width the centres of the bends. I shall try it in due course. My previous attempts, whilst ultimately successful, used two plates and various clamps ...

Re: What Black is Black?
Richard, You've really opened up a can of worms now. I must have spent hours - no weeks discussing paint colours on locos over the years. There isn't an answer. If it looks right to you, someone will tell you it's wrong, and what they think is right you will doubt. Fact is none of the livery colours...

Re: LMS Milk Tank - 2
Keith, I don't think you've got to the bottom of weight reduction on your box. My 3 1/2" gauge locos all live in boxes. The first one was made in 12mm ply and was almost as heavy as the loco (a LNER A1). In the box it was really a two man lift. After that I built boxes in 6mm ply. The top and back a...

Infamous we may be, but we don't look very happy about it!! How do these photographer fellows manage to edit out our our happy smiling faces? Do we get Photoshopped? I don't remember looking so glum. Seriously good pics though. Next rally we're all going to have to make an effort to smile for the ca...
