Hi all.
GL5 will be having a club stand at the Statfold Model Railway Show ( https://www.statfold.com/modelrailwayexhibition) this coming weekend. This is an attempt to try and promote the club in the modelling world. If you happen to be in the area come and say hello.
Regards, Jonny

Re: BATH GL5 MEVENT
Hi Andy. Apologies for the slow reply. The event at Bath and West will not be happening this year. Hopefully an event can be arranged for 2025. Thank you to all who replied to the polls that have been held, but with a prospective low turnout and another event happening not many miles away we’ve deci...

Re: Signal wire termination
My attempts at joints never come out quite that neat! There's also a little regional variance too. An old hand who used to work on the Western (It would have to be the Western who would do things there own way, wouldn't it?!), showed me the way that he had been taught to do them which involved wrapp...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?
The last two weeks have been very productive. The Block Bells are complete and tested (Much to the Domestic Authority's delight, though the Trainee Engineer thoroughly enjoyed the testing session). https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5774/24153297975_3ae8205e44_z.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1599/2...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?
Jonny, Thanks for the signals diagrams. Unfortunately the resolution isn't too good so it's difficult to see some of the detail, so can you confirm the following: Access to Shildon yard is controlled only by the subsidiary signal S3 and and the stop and distant signals on the approach are fixed. Si...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?
Apologies for not getting these up on the forum earlier. My excuse is a week sat in a class room being bombarded with rules and regulations! Following the meeting at Dave's, here are the latest plans for Shildon Yard, Middleton Junction and Noble Sidings. I've made a minor alteration to Noble Siding...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?
I had a phone call from Chris who suggested the use of Muscle wire for operating the signals. This stuff contracts when heated, usually by passing a current through it. It's used quite a lot on table top railways for point operation etc. Though it's not a bad idea, I think it could be difficult in ...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?
Servos. I'm still struggling with this. If we connect the operating wire directly to the servo arm (very easy) we can only use a small amount of movement, and that will be jittery, that's how servos are, and any jitteriness is magnified at the signal arm. Using the full movement of say 180 degrees ...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?
I live very close to Banbury which is still a bastion of semaphore signalling in the modern age. I can get photos of them (Western Region I think) if needed. Make the most of them Guy. Stage 3 of the re-signalling works went in on Saturday night just gone. North and South Boxes will be abolished Ap...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?
Well done Eddy! I'll see if I can find the drawings on our system at work when I get back there. Thanks for putting the drawings up Jonny. I'd agree with Eddy, that something like this years arrangement at Noble's yard would be better to operate. I can't offer much on your ideas, just, should there ...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?
Can Jonny please explain why we need 3 signalmen. I assume one in the main yard, one at the junction, and one in the bottom yard, but do we need that last one? And should we consider properly signalling just a small section or yard as a start? You assumed correctly Dave with the three signalmen. It...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?
From your photos Dave it appears that the signal is electrically driven. I'd be surprised if most of the BR semophores now in service aren't motor operated It isn't. It's mechanically worked, but electrically detected (And it was the last semaphore I messed with on the main line before moving to th...

Re: Buckeye fitted BR CCT?
I've had a look at a photo of a Mark 1 underframe and can see nothing that would suggest a mechanism to centre the coupling and my experience with them in 12" to the foot is that they can be moved off centre manually to aid coupling on curved tracks. Pressure from the spring, which is double acting...

Re: A few thoughts to consider
Hi Jordan. As someone who has built so many wagons (ok, two partly built opens) I'm almost not qualified to comment. Where does one look for designs? There aren't many published designs (Doug Hewson's and Dave Noble's efforts excepted) in 1 1/16th inch scale, and as far as I know no reference librar...

Re: Illuminate Lamps
Just to correct myself, the batteries are LR626, not CR927 as stated above (They were for another project!). The good news is these can be had from Rapidbatteries off of Ebay for £1.99 for 10, including postage.

Re: Illuminate Lamps
Yes, it was a brilliant weekend, thoroughly enjoyable. Erm, well if you insist Keith.... Having followed the thread on night running, I thought it was about time to sort out a pair of headlamps, and a tail lamp (Even if I can't put them on the engine, I've now fitted a full compliment of lamp irons ...

but... what if there was something unusual (dangerous) on the track, like a cow, a lost wagon or a fallen rock? When they started building railways, the then government (Having lost one of its members to a well known Liverpool & Manchester Railway loco), got a little touchy about public saf...
