Hi Folks, Happy New Year to All. I am currently wanting to line the side water tanks, and cab sides on my ex GWR 1500 class "SPEEDY" locomotive, with the British Railways white and red pin stripes. I wonder could anybody provide me with the white and red pin stripe (width) sizes, and space between p...

Boiler Bushes

Hi Folk's I am ordering some boiler making materials. The supplier is saying that gun metal has now been generally replaced as modern materials go by bronze. He is asking if I want sae660 leaded cast bronze or Pb102 hard drawn bronze (90% copper) To make the Main steam pipe (smoke box bush), Main (b...

Re: driving truck suspension

Thanks for your input also 'Scrat, I have now made the two axle end rollers the same size as the axle material and spaced the bolster to the same distance as it was originally with a thick washer ( as you suggested Dave). The bolster does still not flex about freely. This seems to be because the bol...

Nice to hear from you, hope you are o/k.
Yes your description of what I have is spot on.

driving truck suspension

Hi Folks, I have bought a driving truck. It is the design of a long low sided truck. It has 8 wheels, set on 2 individual bogeys. This type seems quite common among the GL5 membership. I wonder if anybody could provide me with the set up and some photos, of how 'if any springing' is utilised to keep...

Re: Press fit tolerance for wheels

Hi Eddy, thanks for your reply and advice. Yes you are correct, the axles do have centres in the ends. My thoughts were to make a mandrell to hold the wheels on (like a stub axle), to true up the individual wheels and re-profile them prior to going onto the axles,(having first re-bored them in the 3...

Press fit tolerance for wheels

Hi Folks, The driving truck I bought a while back had wheels that needed correctly re-profiling and setting to run truly on the axles. The wheels had previously been glued on. I have had the wheels removed and am now wanting to sort them out. I plan to machine the axle diameter down a little, re-bor...

Hi again Guy's, Just an update on the smoke box re-paint. Thanks for you suggestions, I chose to use my drill and wire disk wheel, (sorry Ballan), it was just so handy. I then (as you both suggested ) painted gloss engine laquer directly onto the brass smoke box and steel rings and door. I ran the e...

I think I will go with the general purpose silicone Eddy, (thanks for confirming that it lasts a long time without adverse effect under high temperature).

smoke box seal

Hi Folks, Can anybody suggest a good brand of sealant to use for the seal where the smoke box meets the boiler barrel ? I suppose I could use silicone sealant. I wondered if there was a sealant that would do the job which would stay supple, making it easy to remove the smoke box in the future,as app...

Thanks Brent for that input.
I too, would have taken it for granted that a model produced by a quality manufacturer, would have been true to scale.

Re: Wheel back to back dimensions

Thanks Ballan for making that clear, The narrow gauge being different from standard gauge had not registered with me prior to this comment from Brent. It is of interest to me, as I along with other's at our club have been lobbying a move to install the third rail giving access to the 5" sector of th...
