Re: Rivet tool

Now that’s interesting.

I have always fancied building a van. It might be just what I need to get me back in the swing of GL5.

Keep me in mind.

Re: Rivet tool

Ben,

I guess you are referring to the "mole grip" type riveting tool?
I have one you may borrow.

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Ben, Sounds like a good idea. Cable wise; I can bring along the drum of CAT5 cable. One observation from this years Shildon is - we need to think about how we get a cable to cross the tracks bearing in mind the thickness of a sleeper is not very much. Look forward to doing this big cable up sometime...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Having cleaned up your castings given them a blast with brake cleaner to degrease prior to applying paint. Allow time for it vap off and the casting temperature to return to room temp. Cheap and convenient. I have found Modern hammerite gives poor results not that anyone would use it for models... W...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1583/24954721992_c61fbc74a3.jpg Hopefully gives an idea of the colour.I am happy to try and get advice on colours used if something more accurate is required. I would suggest going for a Halford colour as everyone should be able to get this. I can try and work out the...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

There is a whole host of colours with the title signal. Not sure that it is railway related. To be honest if I recall my OO gauge days a signal red looked too orange like. Anyway, I recently resprayed some of my clubs signals which are used on the 7 1/4 gauge railway and used Halford's Ford Radiant ...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Dave, I have completed the Balance arm pins and the crank arm pins. I shall get them in the post to you tomorrow. Wow what a fiddle job that was. Most challenging especially drilling the 1/32 hole in stainless. bit like playing russian roulette ! Broke one drill and then a second but managed to salv...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

I had another go at replicating the signal pull wire termination. In this case I have used a small diameter tube to act as a crimp. Then given it a lick of silver solder. cut off the surplus cable then filed away the crimp. then dressed over the joint with fine electrical wire and sealed it with som...

I have sent you an e-mail of an drawing for a miniature LMS signal arm. It should help hopefully.

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

I like the look of those brackets. I have to say these signal parts are looking really good. Any more signals required let me know and I'll happy build one. I received a length of signal wire yesterday. I have an idea for replicating the thimble termination and will report accordingly. With a bit of...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

I think I need to better understand the system has anyone done a schematic. Is the power problem down to having a central battery? If so could this be more than 12 volts, say 24 volts. This would then half the current required which will lessen the effect of volt drop but it means the voltage regula...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

If you are worried about table top operation is scorching due to the heat then simply mount on a nice polished wooden base that can be removed. Don't forget the heat from the 7805 will be due to a) the current drawn by the 5volt circuits connected to it and b) the difference in voltage, that is the ...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Can you not use the base to act as the heat sink? I think it's the same as 0 volt if using one on the 78 or 79 series. Just try to minimise the amount of work the regulator has to do, this will keep the heat down. I would not mind seeing the video but it's way over 10 meg not sure it would email? Yo...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

I feared you might say the wire used is springy stainless steel. I am happy to try and devise a technique if you want to send me some bits. The other thing I can do is post a drawing and some info on the method used for full size , which might be useful for anyone else willing to try. I'll try and d...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Dave Can you clarify what loops you mean? Are theses the ones used by the pole wires? If so I have done this work before on full size telegraph poles.... Or more likely do you mean the actual operating wires leading to the signal arm from the servos. This is the seven strands which are wound around ...

Ben,

You may find this link useful

Here I used Daves water-slid transfers and sealed them and finished with a spray lacquer

Happy to bring the tank up one Saturday and discuss.

Wagon building article - the real thing

http://www.wrightsaerials.tv/annexe/wagon-shops.shtml

I came across this article the other day and it makes interesting reading, particularly the mention of timber size used, reference to feeler gauges !and the way the door was formed to mention a few.

Hope you all are well.
