Re: Brake pin rack

I would speak to Steam Workshop too, the photo on the website for the pin style shows ratchet but I have had the pin style from Dougs range in the past. Looks like they might have used the GWR/BR photo on the RCH item?

Re: T26, correct shade of blue

Not a lot of help for an RAL number but the following from the GER Society site suggests 490 is not the same colour as the original GER colours "The actual blue colour used was a pure ultramarine blue - a tin of which is in the GERS Collection. When painted over the French grey undercoat and varnish...

Welcome Adrian, make yourself known at Gilling at the weekend and Muck in it is much more fun if you get involved, no experience required just a willingness to learn from the inevitable mistakes!

Re: Headlamp code

I think it would be correct to put the top lamp iron on the smokebox door, all the photo's of Super Clauds I have looked at this afternoon have it there from the first one converted in 1922 onwards. It is not mounted on the ring though, it is mounted inside the ring with the top of the iron roughly ...

It would be worth contacting Peter Robinson as I believe he took over Bill Halls stock etc when Bill retired and may still have some http://www.petersplates.co.uk/petersplates/Home.html

Re: Long Wheel Base Brake Van

These things are all relative, when the prototype of my GER brake van was introduced it was the long wheelbase version at 10'6" compared to the previous short wheelbase version at 9' but that was back in the 19th century and in the 1950's era Gilling diagraming it is definitely short.

Re: Long Wheel Base Brake Van

What is the wheelbase of a Toad?

In Bob's 'Idiots Guide' to working the yards he refers to short wheelbase being nominally 10' and long wheelbase being nominally 16' now there is obviously some leeway on that as regions vary in their designs.

Re: Another new member

Welcome, I would like to say don't just look at Gilling but join in, the yards are always in need of staff, no experience required to be a shunter and it will help you learn the layout of the yards etc. See you there.

Re: Super Claud, looking for the right number.

I forgot to mention that the photo of 8787 above isn't in GER Blue anyway, the lining etc is wrong.

There is a description of the GER Blue livery in the 6th paragraph at http://www.gersociety.org.uk/index.php? ... &Itemid=32

Re: Super Claud, looking for the right number.

Holger

In that case I would suggest 1805 as the only true GER Super Claud, all the rest being LNER ones assuming you are going to letter the tender GER not LNER, if you want an LNER number then any between 8780 and 8789 would probably fit the bill.

Re: Super Claud, looking for the right number.

Holger I'm afraid that the Blue livery is incorrect, the GER stopped painting locos in Blue by 1916, painting them Grey from then until the LNER took over in 1923. As the first Super Claud was no 1805 rebuilt between Oct 1922 and March 1923 they never appeared in Blue, all but the first one appeared...

Re: Super Claud, looking for the right number.

The trouble with that Eddie is that no Super Claude's were painted blue. The first one was completed by the GER in grey, the rest were built/rebuilt by the LNER. GER blue is only correct for the smaller boilered (non-super) ones. Holger, The one that nearly survived to be preserved would have been o...

Re: Lamps reloaded...

Holger In both cases you could use headcode discs in place of lamps until you have time to make/source the correct lamps as both the Great Eastern and Southern used discs in daylight. I have recently made some for my B2 of the slightly later LNER style, I'll post a photo later in the week when I hav...

Whilst this is not one of the points requested by Keith I'll pass on a little idea to help newcomers to wagon building that I got from Doug . A lot of timber underframed wagons have a joggle in the W-irons roughly in line with the bottom of the solebar as shown in this picture of my mineral wagon. h...

Blackgates list a Gunmetal casting for the Dome in their catalogue so should be worth a try. Have you any photos you can post of the loco as I'm a Great Eastern fan and wo...
