Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Ben, I also had thoughts, but for different reasons. Certainly my original method will only work with a bare post, but I didn't see that as a problem. If the PVC section is machined right through, which I think is what we were thinking of, then it won't be possible to fix the servos to it, we need a...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Fistly, thanks to those who attended the meeting yesterday, I think it was well worth while. There was Ben, Jonny, Guy, Alan, Graham and Liz. Thanks also to Annie for making the sandwiches, they tasted fine, though Annie and Liz decided to off for a proper meal instead of sharing ours! The general f...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Jonny,
I reckon from the tables in the link, that we'd need to have at least 300mA at each signal when off. Adding on for the other bits and losses through the cables probably makes it unsuitable. Unless someone knows otherwise.

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

That's good news Jonny, I'll have another go with mine. Some shackles arrived. They look very good to me, as Eddy says, they have a screwed pin rather than a plain one with a split pin. The "handle" on the end of the pin is a bit lumpy and not machined centrally in the pin, but could be filed off. I...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Hope you can make it Guy. Thanks for the info on the door mechanism Eddy, looks like it won't be suitable unfortunately. And for the offer of work, I'll update the previous post. The dimensions I have given will be suitable for one or two arms, so stick to the sizes given. There is indeed slotting t...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

David, Thanks for the idea. I've had a look at them, but can't tell if they are motors or solenoids. If the latter, then they will be too vicious, and on my car they sound as if they are, but if they are motors it depends on their size and how slowly we can make them operate. The price is very inter...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Thanks for that Eddy. I've sent for some shackle and wire samples, I'll post pictures when they arrive. The wire is available very cheaply direct from China if we decide what size we want, balance between scale and being able to see to form it! I did find some thimbles, but they were heart shaped so...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Ben has suggested a get together at my place to chat about signals and stuff, on Saturday or Sunday 27/28th. Either day or time suits us both, so if any of you would like to come, please let me know, and first one to plumb for a day or time has it.

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Interesting links Richard, I use Ebay for all sorts, but hadn't thought of that. Having made a couple of posts, it occurs to me that some may have difficulty machining 15mm tube, perhaps. Would anyone like me to machine their posts for them, if so, let me know and I'll get in the material and make a...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Glad you may be able to help Chris, what is the maximum thickness of acrylic you can cut. If you can let me know, I'll order a little bit and send a dxf. Jonny, could you let us know what electrical components need to go with each signal, I can then arrange the cavities in the base to house them and...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

how is it all going to be financed? It has to be financed by us. If I build 2 signals, I will have to pay for all the parts for them, but they will be mine, not GL5s, just like the portable track which is owned by individuals, not the club. If those two signals are to suit a location at Shildon, I ...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

I'm guessing a bit here, but I would have thought that they'd be OK, especially as they will be painted and therefore hopefully dry. I intend to silver solder them, and the solder fillet will shed water from the joint if it does get wet, but I'm sure Araldite would be fine. The reason for using diss...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Welcome Guy. There was a little meeting of those interested in signalling after the AGM last weekend. There was Jonny, Richard and me, and Steve Birch stayed a while. Jonny produced his drawing of Shildon and proceeded to put signals on it again, I think he indicated that we'll need something like 7...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

BR semaphore signal drawings - sorted. Via an anonymous donor. I can say no more, but many thanks to him, or her. Next question, are we all happy to go with this style? And, how tall do you think they should be, bearing in mind, scale suggests quite low, drivers will want them fairly high, and, they...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Good bit of research Eddy. I have also been looking on the web, I didn't manage to find that particular SRS archive list, but this forum entry http://forum.signalbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4548 has scans of SM-68 and SM-1. Neither is dimensioned, but the latter shows clearly the arrangement at the ...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Eddy, I was trying to avoid rustable materials if possible, but the poor range of non-ferrous may lead to mild steel. At the moment I'm thinking of 1/2" mild steel and 15mm stainless. This would cost about £6 per post. Yes, a cam actuator wouldn't require reversing. Not over impressed with the casti...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

I recently received a little article for Turnout from Martin Rant about a semaphore signal which he had powered using an R/C servo. He just removed the electronic bits and used it as a winch, the chain fastened to the arm and with limits controlled by microswitches. Neat. DSC_0326.JPG And while we'r...
