Re: Interested in a signal building group?

I've just done the best part of a trial erection of one of my signals and I think, given its small size and intricacy, it has gone very well despite the number of 12BA nuts that are now hiding somewhere on the workshop floor. The castings are really very good and require very little fettling. Dave a...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

I can't see the point of each of us buying enough paint to coat up several full size signal arms (2m2 per400ml) so I suggest Ben gets the paint - both red and yellow - from Nu-agane (who's website doesn't work although they do have an e-bay shop) and we send him the arms to paint as he has kindly of...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

There are issues with the signal arm colours as Keith identifies. Humbrol do Signal Red in satin finish but not Signal Yellow or Golden Yellow. Precision do Signal Red and Signal Yellow in dull finish which I presume is matt. Looking at the RAL colour charts Golden Yellow is a much darker shade than...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Hi Dave,

You'll forgive me for tendering my apologies for not attending Saturday's meeting, it's a long haul from here. Hope it's productive and we can get down to production soon.

Best Wishes for the New Year to you and all GL5.

No wagons building at present I'm afraid but here's a shot of the current new build.

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Dave, Since the number on a signal is used to identify its location among other things, only one plate is fixed to a signal post regardless of the number of signal arms carried. The plate shows the number of the primary route signal only to avoid confusion. The signal box will have the primary route...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Hi Dave and signalling group members, After the discussions about the spectacle glasses there has been no notification of a resolution to the issues. Has it been sorted? In that respect I was in Hobbycraft the other day and saw some transparent glass paint made by Marabu. It is designed for glass an...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Dave. PM received, thanks. The ladders will be packed up the weekend and sent on Monday probably. Your prototype looks well. Pity about the ladder length though. I think I'll tale the surplus off the top, extending the 1/4" BSP thread will be a pain if the bottom has to be reduced in length. Regards...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Dave, I've had a go at colouring some perspex today. I had some cheap translucent acrylic paint and even with 6 coats, visibly thick, my headlamp showed a yellowy orange through the red, although the green and alternate coats of green and blue might be considered passable. Had I shone the light thro...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Dave, My loco lamps use warm white LEDs from http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEDs-Warm-White-3mm-x-20-inc-res-3-for-2-av-/161401964231?hash=item25944e86c7:g:Ys4AAOxyHntSaBZh . I power them with 2 x AG4 batteries and they run for a day at least. If you are powering them from a 12v supply you will need to p...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Dave, Understand your reasons for deleting posts, but for me my background in business demands that correspondence is not deleted until the project is complete. So you can see why I was concerned when a post disappears without any explanation. Is the servo jitters such a big problem? The signals at ...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Slightly off topic but of importance all the same. At 22:11 on 24th Oct, Dave Noble posted a reply to my post of 9:00 pm the same day. Dave's post has now disappeared which I would think is an unusual and concerning event. Is this the Halloween effect or is there some plausible explanation? Regards ...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Dave, Going back to the start of this project I'm sure it was decided to exclude all the signalling from Shildon Yard other than the starter (S3) and the home (S1) on the basis we needed to restrict the amount of work to begin with and that Shildon Yard could be signalled manually by the Yard Master...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Dave, According to the July 7th issue of Johny's drawings the Shildon starter is S3 which is already allocated to Graham. So unless the drawings have been changed we need 13 posts and they are all allocated as above. I can't see the second left hand bracket unless you are looking at Jonny's original...

Ben,

It'll be couple or three weeks before I can do them, but I don't suppose you're desperate for them yet. Let me know if that's a problem.

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

I would think that everyone is probably back from holiday by now, and as the operating season is drawing to a lesser state of frenzy, work on the signalling will be ramping up. Any chance of a report on progress and future activity now?

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

I did earlier suggest putting a tension spring between the servo and the signal arm to damp out the 'jitters'. It will just act much like a wire operated signal which has a delay between the lever in the box and the signal as the stretch in the wire is taken up and the inertia of the balance weight ...

Re: Interested in a signal building group?

Dave, Having considered the amount of domestic work I'm now involved with, garden walls , decorating kitchen refurb and so on, I think I'd rather be at work! I called in to see my old colleagues the other week and they looked just a bit busy. I was very tempted to offer my services, although I don't...
