The railway is coming

Hi guys, Being busy the last months with my house and garden, I still read and write in my fora. Here are some pictures of my new garden after we bring in 160 m3 sand, soil and lots of concrete. http://img325.imageshack.us/img325/2683/graven10kx.jpg In the meantime there are already some vegetables ...

GWR coaches and freightcars

Hi, There was no responce to my question above, but in the meantime I can answer it myself. Last week I was in the lucky circumstance to visit the STEAM museum in Swindon. This turns out to be a beautiful museum where one can find lots of information about th Great Western Railway. It was ther...

Wanted: GWR freight cars

Hello, For my "new" 57XX class loco I'm looking for pictures or drawings of some GWR freight cars. Who knows a good link or book to look into? The loco is not ready to run yet, as you see in the next pictures.  :( http://img460.imageshack.us/img460/6729/a31b7zb.jpg http://img164.imagesh...

GWR carriages

Hi guys, Last saturday I was lucky to buy a 57XX Class Tank locomotive. Now I'm looking for some nice carriages to hang behind the loco. My preference is GWR carriages or freight cars from the period 1920 till 1950. Where do I find some pictures of carriages (like the one below or smaller type...

What do you need?

Hello 5" railroaders, Of course everyone has his own vision on his workshop, but what I expirienced, and therefore would like to tell you, is that the metalcutting bandsaw (for give me if the name is not right) is a very usefull machine. :D That is if tuned right, so it cuts perfect square. :...

Catagories

Hi, Well a catagory where members could introduce themselves would be nice, so we know who is who. 8) And in the German fora, which I joined, there is always a catagory called "End Station" or "Depot" or maybe a name like "Junkyard" where they put all the stuff which is no longer actuel or does not ...

permiable concrete

Hello Davet, With "permiable concrete" you mean the stuff they use for highways to avoid the rainsplash on your windscreen I suppose. We know that here under the name ZOAP. Very nice to drive on, a little longer breakway. The main problems is you need a big hot machine to lay it down and I never saw...

Dutch dikes are famous

Hello, @Brent, of course all your suggestions have some value and I like your joke about the frogs in my future turnouts. In the meadow behind our house we several times spotted a beautiful wild stork. (there goes my frogs. ) Still I'm a 5" railroader and no matter what circumstances I do find...

Wet garden

Hi guys, In my first topic I told you that our garden was very wet. As a result of having nearly the same level as the surrounding ditche. Thats what we supposed. Guess what? Trimming the trees on the side of the road I spot a little pool of water between the grass. So what, you shoul...

Railway system

Hi Brent, I do agree with you that if the railbed isn't flat your track will move up and down when there is a train passing by. Therefore it is neccesary to fix the track frequently in order to avoid it is creeping away. One should use a right number of sleepers per meter, this will help to ge...

Re: Waterlogged ground

Do not lay concrete on waterlogged ground unless it is a large base like the one in your photo!.One third of a meter wide strips to lay track on will move. Hello Brent, Thank for your reaction. :) Maybe I have to explain some more detail for a good understanding of my railroadsituation. What I inte...

Railroad design

Hello modelrailroaders, Here my theory to calculate your minimum radius of your track. If I can put 24 vehicles in a 360°, I do consider that as a round circle. With less vehicles in the circle I say it's angular. Just my point of view. :) Now you can calculate the maximum lenght of your vehicles. (...

Standards

Hello Dave, It is a little late after you wrote your question, but I found a site with your desired answers. Unfortunaly it is in German and of course metric. Still I hope I can help you with this site. Go to: http://www.dampf-modell-bahn.de You will see a drawing of a track and a little lowe...

Buffers

Hi, My buffers will be made of aluminium. We talk here about a standard model in 5". The buffer can compensated about 12 mm (1/2") Because I prefer aluminium to work on it, it's not as hard as steel, it weights one third of steel and it doesn't rust. http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/9171/buf...

Catagories

I do agree with you that the forum is rather small. Keep it in your mind for future expansions.
My favourites then could be: Track - Events - Workshoptips. :)
