Hello,
I'm currently building a 5" gauge 7 plank open wagon.
The drawings are clear, but which nuts and bolts (screws) are used to hold the individual planks against the steel corner angles?
Can anybody help me with this?
Kind regards
Erik-Jan

In reply to Erik-Jans question, the answer is, it depends.
Early wagons seem to have used coach bolts almost exclusively for all the construction, so for the corner plates 1/2" coach bolts, put in from inside, with washer plates, would have been normal. Later on, the washer plates were often left off for economic reasons. Some later construction used countersunk bolts with oversized heads, particularly for merchandise wagons so as to leave a flush inside.
I use 12BA coach bolts for the corner plates and diagonals in my kits, with 11BA for the remainder of the body, and mostly 10BA in the underframe, though the most important thing is the AF size of the nuts which are seen, and not the threads which are not.
Hope this helps,
Dave.
