Facebook & Forums

Post by Paul Lazenby » Wed Jun 08, 2016 10:36 pm

Hi, I re-read Guy Harding's article re Facebook in T/O No.64
It occurred to me that despite the many wonders and advantages of FB compared to Forums, Guy does not mention the continual bombardment of emails from FB, especially those trying to gain your approval to access your email Address Book.
Whilst you can (nowadays - at least) lock-down your Profile so as to be reasonably annon' (if you so wish) and control the number of emails that FB send you - this latter feature is not an immediate option - unless you look for it. Also there is the risk of your FB Account becoming compromised.
Personally, I see FB as a form of Data Collection?

Hi,

this was the main reason I do not have FB. My wife had it for a few weeks and then got fed up with notifications like "someone you might know has marked someone you could know on a picture made by someone whom you do not know....." and lots of other notifications that for some reason are hard or impossible to switch off. Even after leaving FB you get notifications for some time.
Forum only gives notifications when requested to do so. This is why I prefer the forum.

Best regards

You can turn off the notifications from Faceache. I think I only get an email from them now when the wife tags me in a photo, usually one or other of the dogs.

I entirely agree with Holger. I joined Facebook, and my inbox was continually filled with rubbish from them, and when I say rubbish, I mean rubbish. It just isn't designed as a place for sensible, measured discussions, unlike this Forum, which works well for that sort of thing.

I'm not on Facebook any more!
