It is often commented in GL5 circles about putting the tank wagon so many wagons away from the engine. (not to mention gun power van!!)

Often great fun for the shunter when trying to make up a train only to find the required tank wagon next to the smoke box!

Anyway, this gentleman has a fine collection of B&W photos one of which shows a small freight passing through Stratford with a tank wagon next to the loco.

Inert fuel perhaps??

Is there a BR/RCH rule book on this? I vaguely remember hearing that if it was highly flammable/combustible like petroleum it needed a barrier, but things like tar wagons did not. I should go and look up the red solebar/red stripe regulations, but that all changed during the war I think.

An interesting one I read was the marshaling of a van at the back of a sand train as a convenience to the guard to stop him getting grit blasted!
