Whilst idling around the web I came across this:

It has a nice illustration of how to make up terminal joints which I thought might be of interest.

My attempts at joints never come out quite that neat! There's also a little regional variance too. An old hand who used to work on the Western (It would have to be the Western who would do things there own way, wouldn't it?!), showed me the way that he had been taught to do them which involved wrapping the end of each strand under the first two coils of the next strand.

I suppose your Western man was using the method Keith was trying to replicate on page 10 of the build group thread. The basis is drawing BRS-SM121/1 for terminating seven strand galvanised wire. After putting on the first seven turns the end of the strand is cut off and the remaining straight length is bent to lie in the join of the two wires and the next strand is wound over it. Two turns overlap would be about the minimum that would lock the previous strand in. It worked for me with copper wire.
